This true trekking paradise allows you to explore on foot an extraordinary diversity of landscapes and terrain.

Alpine atmospheres in the Highlands

The Highlands are shaped by a magnificent granite ridge, creating powerful massifs with smooth, grey domes.

The Andringitra mountain range and the splendid Tsaranoro valley, Mount Ibity south of Antsirabe, the Vavavato foothills and the rice paddies of Betafo, the Imerina region with its sacred hills and russet villages—all are ideal destinations for outstanding hikes.

In the northwest of the country, the majestic Tsaratanana volcanic massif creates a unique climatic barrier, allowing the Sambirano region and Nosy Be to enjoy an idyllic climate. It is also the roof of Madagascar, with its Maromokotra summit standing at 2,876 meters above sea level.

In the Sava region, in the northeast of Madagascar, rise the peaks of Marojejy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this impressive massif boasts remarkable vegetation coverage. Trekking through the Marojejy massif is a genuine expedition.

Lakes and Volcanoes of Itasy and Betafo

Exploiting weaknesses in this rigid and fractured mantle, magma—basalt in the making—has shaped a series of volcanoes overlooking countless lakes. The Itasy region is a magnificent area to explore on foot. From Ampefy to the Lilly Falls, from powerful springs to bubbling geysers that remind us that telluric activity is far from extinct.

The Ruiniform Sandstones of Isalo and Makay

Sandstone and limestone sedimentary layers established themselves in the western part of the country. They form a series of spectacular barriers. The ruiniform sandstones with their fantastical erosion patterns in the Isalo and the mysterious Makay massifs offer beautiful trekking opportunities through pristine environments. They evoke the sense of the Saharan Tassili.

Limestone Plateaus and the Tsingy

The limestone belt extends from the far south to the far north of the Great Island. Spectacular erosion of these sedimentary layers has created remarkable places such as the Tsingy of Bemaraha and the Tsingy of Ankarana.
